The Risks of Kundalini Awakening Without Proper Guidance

Kundalini gets talked about online as something to chase. Rarely does anyone mention what happens when it moves through a body that isn't prepared for it.

Kundalini has become a popular word in wellness spaces, often used loosely to describe any intense spiritual or energetic experience. What gets left out of most conversations is that kundalini awakening, when it happens suddenly or without proper preparation, can be genuinely destabilising. This isn't meant to scare anyone away from the practice, it's meant to give the honest picture that's often missing.

What Kundalini Actually Is

In tantric and yogic tradition, kundalini is described as a dormant energy at the base of the spine that, when activated, moves upward through the body's energetic channels. When this process happens gradually, with proper grounding and guidance, it can support real shifts in awareness, vitality, and connection to self.

The issue isn't kundalini itself. The issue is what happens when this energy moves through a nervous system that hasn't built the capacity to hold it, or through someone attempting to force the process along without understanding what they're working with.

What Can Go Wrong

An unprepared or forced kundalini experience can show up as intense anxiety, racing thoughts, insomnia, a sense of being physically wired that doesn't settle for days or weeks, physical pain, headaches, or even impulsive behaviours and decisions. Some people describe overwhelming emotional flooding, old trauma surfacing faster than they can process it, or a disorienting sense of disconnection from their body or their usual sense of self.

Physical symptoms are also common: tremors, unusual sensations running through the body, digestive disruption, or a nervous system that seems to be stuck in a heightened state.

None of this is a sign that something is spiritually wrong. It's a sign that the process moved faster than the body's capacity to integrate it.

Why Guidance Matters So Much Here‍ ‍

A big part of what makes this safe is pacing. A skilled guide knows how to support the body in building capacity gradually, rather than flooding the system all at once. This includes grounding practices, nervous system regulation, psychosomatic guidance, and knowing when to slow a process down rather than push it further.

Without this, people are often left to manage intense experiences alone, sometimes for months, without understanding what's happening to them or how to bring their system back to baseline. This is one of the more overlooked risks in spiritual and wellness spaces that treat kundalini as a goal to rush toward rather than a process to be met with real respect.

Working With This Consciously

None of this means kundalini energy should be avoided. Life force and sexual energy are always present and always moving through the body to some degree, tantric practice simply works with this more directly and consciously. The difference between a supportive experience and a destabilising one usually comes down to pacing, preparation, and the presence of someone experienced enough to recognise when a nervous system needs support rather than more intensity.

This is part of why solo experimentation with intense breathwork or energy practices, especially anything marketed as a fast route to awakening, deserves real caution. Working with a trauma-informed, properly trained practitioner isn't a formality, it's what makes this process something the body can actually integrate rather than survive.
